Ice Skating

Student Activities Council brought in a portable ice rink, so of course we had to go check it out.
Such a great idea to celebrate the holidays.
We also played inside the giant snow globe (complete with fake snow)
Fun fun times with some of my favorite people.

all in one night

watched the 3rd annual Christmas tree lighting at President Jasinski's house.
watched MTV's The Buried Life speak on campus.
watched the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show decked out in our PINK clothes.

looking up...?

welp...i'm kind freaking out right now.

two weeks left of classes and one week of finals.

several of my friends will graduate come december 16th and many will not return next semester because they begin student teaching.

seriously, is college ending?
why?

i am having issues with 'growing up'
i don't think i'm ready yet.
i have too many wonderful memories at this place.
i have made the bestest of friends.

the thought of change right now is scary.

i keep telling myself that "regardless of where you go,there will always be good people"
(quote from my wonderful mama)

but goodness gracious...
i'm about to pick my life up come feb. and move to greece for four months.
am i crazy?

then i have to get a job.
under pressure.

i'm going to go read matthew 6:25-34 now.
it's good for this topic.

the pumpkin pie

Thanksgiving afternoon was spent with my dad's side of the family.
My grandma is so precious.

Thanksgiving evening was spent with my mom's side of the family in Sioux Falls, SD.
I decided not to particpate in Black Friday shopping this year.
Look at the cutest new addition to the Kerkvliet group - baby Carson!
I have so much to be thankful for this holiday season.

Extraordinary things

11/19/11 in St. Joe after the Bearcats beat Missouri Western

We charged the field after we beat our rivals.
The Griffins beat us once this year, but in playoffs we weren't going to let it happen again.

I think this is one of those photos that I will look back on and say...
"This is one of those moments when you are truly happy."

I won't remember the papers I wrote or the tests I did horrible on...
BUT
I know I will always remember the moments with my friends when we do extraordinary things on ordinary days.

P.S. The Bearcats won again this Saturday! Hopefully I'll be able to make the road trip to Kansas to root them on.

Thanksgiving with my friends

The boys of Big Blue hosted their 2nd Annual Thanksgiving dinner last week before everyone headed home.
They worked extra hard to make their house spotless with plenty of seating for everyone.

We had so much food...
fun..
laughter...
dancing...
and so many people as you can see below.

Seriously love my friends.
Break dancing after dinner?
It doesn't get much better than that.

christmas TREES

the Christmas TREES are up.  Yes plural, not singular.
Two.
Dos.
Not one, but two beauties.

One white.
One green.

I had such a wonderful weekend.
Screamed my heart out at the Bearcat playoff football game on Saturday.
We won! Whoo hoo!

Screamed my heart out when a bird flew into our house this evening.
I opened the back door to shake out the rugs and BAM a bird flew in.

Fluttered all around the house.

My friend describes it best in her Facebook Status:
Imagine this: Rosalind Thiel with a broom chasing a bird, Angela Wasko under the coffee table calling Brady Fleshamn to come to our rescue, me and Natalie Bannister crawling on the ground, and Rachael Bannister whistling to lure the bird outside. This just happened.

college life...

I spent the last two days living in the library preparing for a big test and paper.
Took the test today...walked out feeling great.

Then I rethought my 25 point essay question and realized I went down the wrong path.
Cried my eyes out yesterday (because I was stressed) and today.
The only thing helping me move on is the big box full of TOMS that came in the mail yesterday and the Bearcat Marching Band show this evening.

Thank goodness its the weekend.
Thank goodness life will go on.

Last Home Bearcat Football Game

 well...as a student that is.

From someone who really doesn't love watching the sport, I have to say that I will miss Bearcat Football games.
The tailgating, the pep rally before the game, alumni proudly displaying their flags...
the cheerleaders, the fans, the player's parents...

and of course...my favorite: The Bearcat Marching Band!

yum yum yum.

ashley and i went and test tasted the muffins and bagels out.
 they were delicious!

11:11 on 11/11/11

i love college.
especially the nights when you go out with friends who love to dance.
dave and brady are known for their 'cat daddy.'

this might sound completely strange, but sometimes i take mental photos in my mind...
moments that really stand out to me.

my mental photo on friday night was all of my friends and i crowded on a small couch after coming home from the bar eating carmel popcorn.

life is so fun...!

Guess what!

I changed my mind about the whole 'graduate early' thing.
I have officially been accepted to study abroad next semester in Athens, Greece!
(Yes, I know their country is going through a lot right now.)
But...I am thrilled.
I hope you are too because I'm always up for visitors!
Go get your passport if you don't have one already.
See you in February, Greece!

walk a mile (or two) in someone elses shoes...

I gave one of my most memorable campus tours yesterday.
I walked into the family room of Mabel Cook and found the prospective student and his father anxious to see the Northwest campus.

After exchanging greetings and handing them their meal coupon, we headed out the door.
The first few steps were different than normal.
The prospective student had leg braces and walking sticks.

The first building we visited was Hudson-Perrin, two of our freshman residence halls.
I walked them through the building and into the staged tour room.
I suddenly noticed a look of concern on the father's face.
You see, the tour room has lofted beds.

The dad raised the question, "How would my son get into bed? He can't climb the ladder"

I explained to him that the lofts in Hudson-Perrin are adjustable and can be placed on the ground.
The student exclaimed, "Dad, you know I could climb that ladder!"
"Son, I know you can, but I don't want you to. It worries me"

We continued on the campus tour and had some great conversations about the student's involvement in cross country.
Yes, you read that correctly.
This student has a special bike that he uses to compete.
He told me that they have to hold him back a few minutes otherwise he will pass all the runners.

It was time to show the family Bearcat Food Court.  I showcased the different restaurants and explained Aladine (our meal plan) to them.

As we were leaving the cafeteria, another concerning look overtook the father's face.
His question: "How would my son carry his food? Could someone carry his tray for him?"

At this point my heart started to ache.
This thought had never crossed my mind.

My response: "I am sure that a cafeteria employee would be able to assist your son.  Plus, he seems like a really outgoing guy, I am sure he will make a lot of friends who would be willing to help him."

Someone in line overheard our conversation and jumped in.
Strangely enough, she is the director of helping students with disabilities on campus.
We chatted for a bit and she made room in her schedule to meet with the family at 2:00.
(This is just one of the many reasons why I love Northwest - we have incredible faculty members)

The family and I continued on our campus tour.
When the student got tired, we took breaks.
In the library we hung out for a bit and ate some of the candy we found at the front desk.
We took a picture next to the cutout of Bobby the Bearcat in Dietrich Hall.
We chatted about potential majors and careers.

As the tour was wrapping up, I noticed that the student was getting tired but determined to walk the 2 mile tour.
The student kept teasing his dad saying, "Dad, my legs are stronger than yours."

The tour ended and as the student sat down on the couch in the family room, I noticed sweat dripping from his nose.
He was exhausted, but he did it.
He then told me that he couldn't wait to come to Northwest.

I am so grateful for this experience.
I truly believe that it was a lesson from up above.
Always walk a mile in someone else's shoes before you make assumptions.

So many times our society sees people with disabilities and assume that they can't do a whole lot.
False.
I have given plenty of tours to high school students (without disabilities) who complain about their feet being tired thirty minutes into the tour.
Not once did I hear a complaint from the student who has cerebral palsy.

I take my mobility for granted.
I can move around as I please.
Running, jumping, sitting, standing.

I believe that certain accommodations need to be made for those with disabilities.
It is important to remember that they can do everything that we can do, they might just do it a little different.

One last thing...
Would you do me a favor?
Next time you see someone with a handicap, hold the door open for them.  I was surprised to see how many students neglected to do this yesterday while we were on tour.

I strongly believe that...
Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and warmth. - Mother Teresa
